Movie selection can take longer than the movie itself. Narrow the choice before opening the room, and give the group a decision they can actually make.

1. Ask about constraints before favorites

Start with running time, language and anything people want to avoid. Someone who needs to leave early cannot fairly choose a long film. Someone avoiding intense horror should not have to explain that after the opening scene.

Ask everyone for a maximum running time, a preferred language and any content to avoid. Remove films that fail those conditions before asking for votes.

Use BBFC content advice as a UK reference when discussing age suitability and sensitive content. Check your own country's rating and let the responsible adults decide for children.

2. Offer a short shortlist

Bring two or three options with a one-sentence description of each. Include the mood and length, without revealing the ending. Collect preferences in your existing group conversation. Zopley's room can then be ready for the chosen film instead of becoming a waiting room.

Present two titles in the same format: premise, tone, length and viewing access. Set a decision deadline so one late suggestion cannot restart the whole vote.

For a structured way to prepare a screening, use the Into Film club planning guide and adapt the activities to your own group.

3. Rotate the final choice

If the same person always wins, give a different friend the final pick each session. Let the others set a broad boundary, such as comedy or under two hours. This makes space for surprises without asking everyone to surrender their evening.

Write down whose turn it is to decide a tie. Rotate that person next time and keep the shared limits in place.

Use the W3C guidance on captions and subtitles to distinguish translated dialogue from captions that also describe important sounds. Check which track your current source provides.

4. Keep the runner-up

Save the second choice in your group's notes for another night. You do not need to settle the whole month's viewing today. Once the film is chosen, send the room link, prepare the source and let the evening move on.

Save the losing title with its runtime and the reason people liked it. Check availability again before promising it for the next screening.
