People experience the same film differently. Ask about practical viewing needs before the session, then build a plan that leaves everyone able to follow the story.

1. Ask what would help

Check whether anyone needs captions, a different language track, lower volume or a planned break. Keep the question open and ordinary. You do not need a personal explanation to respect a friend's preference.

Ask whether captions, audio description, a quieter chat or an intermission would help. Let people answer privately if they prefer.

The W3C accessible media guide explains captions, transcripts and audio description. Ask which options your guests need, then test them before the session.

Test dialogue and a scene with an important sound. Confirm the text is readable on the device your guest will use.

2. Test the actual source

Do not assume every version of a film includes the same captions or audio options. Check the source your group will use and its available controls. Zopley's shared room does not create a missing subtitle track.

Open the exact video and test the requested track at the beginning and in a later scene. A filename saying subtitled is not enough.

Use the W3C guidance on captions and subtitles to distinguish translated dialogue from captions that also describe important sounds. Check which track your current source provides.

3. Make the chat optional

Some people can watch and type comfortably; others lose the plot when messages move quickly. Agree on how much conversation belongs during playback. Give people the option to catch up on the discussion after the credits.

Agree that reading or sending chat messages is optional. Put essential pause requests in short messages that are easy to recognize.

For a structured way to prepare a screening, use the Into Film club planning guide and adapt the activities to your own group.

4. Leave enough time for breaks

A longer film may need an intermission. Choose a natural stopping point and explain how people can request a pause. Waiting for everyone to return is kinder than turning a break into a race back to the screen.

Set a break window before playback and wait for individual READY messages afterwards. Someone who needs more time should not have to race the group.
